Opening a Business Bank Account in Zimbabwe: Documents, KYC and Common Rejections

Banking & Finance3 April 2026 7 min read

Banks reject more corporate account applications for paperwork than for risk. Here is the pack that gets approved, and the mistakes that send you back to the branch.

Why the account matters more than founders expect

Trading through a personal account undermines the separation between you and your company, complicates tax, and disqualifies you from most corporate and government contracts.

A corporate account in the registered name is also a prerequisite for receiving tender payments and for many supplier onboarding processes.

The standard document pack

Banks apply know-your-customer rules rigorously. Expect to provide the corporate pack, identification for every signatory, and evidence of the business's address and activity.

A board or members' resolution authorising the account and naming signatories is almost always required and is frequently the missing piece.

  • Certificate of Incorporation and constitutive documents
  • Directors, shareholders and beneficial ownership details
  • Certified ID and proof of address for each signatory
  • Resolution to open the account and appoint signatories
  • ZIMRA BP number and, often, a tax clearance certificate

Why applications get rejected

The recurring causes are inconsistent details between the Registrar record and the application, uncertified or stale ID copies, an unclear description of the business, and an incomplete beneficial ownership picture.

Banks also decline where the stated activity falls in a high-risk category without supporting licences.

Getting it right first time

Align every document before you walk in: same company name, same address, same director list, same spelling. Prepare a one-page business description explaining what you sell and to whom.

Amashad prepares bank-ready packs alongside registration so the account application is a formality rather than an obstacle.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreigner be a signatory?

Yes, subject to the bank's KYC and any exchange-control considerations. Expect additional verification.

Do I need a tax clearance to open an account?

Not always, but a BP number is usually required and clearance smooths the process.

How long does approval take?

Anything from a few days to a few weeks depending on the bank and completeness of your pack.
